General career and life advice

  • Do things that you are passionate about and genuinely interested in; this is what you will do best.
  • Mold your career opportunities to your goals; decide what you want to get out of each unique experience/opportunity, and go for it full force.
  • Don’t be afraid to try multiple jobs and move around a lot over the course of your career.
  • Get yourself into positions where you are getting valuable experience and always challenging yourself and learning. Be highly proactive about pursuing your career -- not only in finding your next job, but also in continuing to learn and grow within a given firm or corporation.
  • Know yourself – know if you want to be a specialist or generalist, know if you want to be in charge or a background advisor, know how comfortable you are with living with risk, and more.
  • Maintain a strong network of acquaintances (but only genuinely), be an avid reader of “smart” books and newspapers – keep yourself informed and interesting – and do good things and be involved in organizations well beyond just your formal full-time job.
  • One interviewee’s take on the best piece of advice she ever received about law school: “Don’t forget who you were before you came to law school. Hold on to your passions and make your law school education serve those… The key is take law school and legal training and broaden it in your career and use of the education -- don’t let IT narrow YOU.”
